Network Services Focus Groups

Date Posted:

people-meetingBe a part of shaping our future! Network Services will be holding Focus Group meetings in late summer of 2014, and we would like our members’ participation!  Two groups will be formed; one geared towards management and the other on technology.  These focus groups will be made up of volunteers from our members’ IT staff, and they will be asked to participate in meetings to provide input for the future of the Network Services group.

The first focus groups for Network Services were held in 2010, which lead to many changes including service offerings that our members heavily utilize today!  Working together with our membership to outline the needs and wants of their organizations is a benefit for all of us.

Please contact Janelle Rients at jrients@logis.org for more information on the Network Services Focus Groups.

October is Security Awareness Month

Date Posted:

This is a good opportunity to let your users know of some tips to help keep their data secure.  A few ideas of things to share are:

  • Use “Window key” + “L” to lock your screen – it is easy to lock your computer by pressing the “Windows” key and the “L” key at the same time.  Locking your computer when you leave the area is important as there may be guests in the area that might view data you had meant to keep private, or non-department members such as custodians and contractors that are allowed physical access but not to the information from your account from the office PC.
  • Tell IT if you suspect a security compromise – if you see a message on your computer that says your computer is infected, please stop using the computer and let your IT staff know immediately.  This message is a commonly used by bad guys on the Internet to try to trick you to do something that will give them access to your computer.  It is also common for it to falsely accuse you of downloading inappropriate files to try to stop you from telling your IT staff.  Don’t worry; your IT staff knows the accusations are typically false and can take steps to prevent your machine from being infected at that point.
  • Only access individual citizen data for official business  – please be careful not to browse individual citizen information out of curiosity.  There are audit trails of access to this information that are occasionally reviewed by local and outside organizations.  There has been recent news coverage of organizations in Minnesota where staff had browsed individual citizen information for purposes not related to their job that were sued and unfortunately lost staff as a result.

We have been proud to offer this service to our members and expect this service to be rapidly adopted throughout our membership over the next few years.  For more information related to this service please feel free to contact Kevin Pikkaraine at kpikkaraine@logis.org.
