Network Services Focus Groups

Date Posted:

people-meetingBe a part of shaping our future! Network Services will be holding Focus Group meetings in late summer of 2014, and we would like our members’ participation!  Two groups will be formed; one geared towards management and the other on technology.  These focus groups will be made up of volunteers from our members’ IT staff, and they will be asked to participate in meetings to provide input for the future of the Network Services group.

The first focus groups for Network Services were held in 2010, which lead to many changes including service offerings that our members heavily utilize today!  Working together with our membership to outline the needs and wants of their organizations is a benefit for all of us.

Please contact Janelle Rients at jrients@logis.org for more information on the Network Services Focus Groups.

Network Services Update

Date Posted:

Network Services

Over the past few years, requests for electronic discovery (e-discovery) of email records have been ever increasing throughout the membership.  Each request takes multiple hours to complete and are usually lacking in its audit trail.

In February, volunteers from the member IT staff along with staff from the LOGIS Network Services group formed an evaluation and research committee and were tasked to search out and evaluate email archiving products. Their goals were to find a product that:

  • Could be centrally managed at LOGIS or each member
  • Expandable to fit from the smallest member to the largest member
  • Configurable to meet each members’ unique requirements
  • That would greatly simply the e-discovery process
  • Produce a result/report that would be understandable to non-IT staff.
  • Affordable for the members

This research project is expected to span the first 8 months of 2012.  When completed, a recommendation will be presented to the membership during an IT Management meeting.

IP Telephony Service – Migration of Unity Servers to a clustered Unity Connect environment.

In February, the Network Services group completed the migration from standalone Unity voice mail servers to the LOGIS clustered Unity Connect voice mail servers for the cities of Minnetonka and Golden Valley.  This migration greatly increases their reliability, allows the member to have disaster recovery for their voice system, and adds the latest features found in Unity Connect.

New Clustered Unity Connection Environment

Date Posted:

LOGIS IP Telephony

Until recently, LOGIS maintained and supported two Cisco Unity voice mail platforms for our members utilizing the IP Telephony service. There were a variety of reasons for having to support this complex environment which included items such as cost, functionality, and the future direction/support by Cisco.

A few months ago Cisco released version 8 of Unity Connection. The version included two very important enhancements: multi-tenant support and the ability to fully integrate voice mail with Exchange. These enhancements enabled us to move forward with creating a cost effective, high availability clustered solution for our members!  By consolidating our members to one platform we have been able to simplify our environment, decrease staff labor and support, reduce hardware replacement (CRP) and maintenance costs, and provide a highly available redundant voice mail platform.

To date, LOGIS, the City of St. Louis Park, and West Metro Fire have been successfully migrated to the new clustered environment.  This transition has been very smooth with little to no impact to our members’ end users.  Our intention is to move the remaining members to this clustered environment by the spring of 2012.
