Managed Services for 2012!

Date Posted:

At the July Board of Directors meeting, the LOGIS board approved the creation of a new service we labeled “Managed Services” for our members!  Managed Services is a suite of services provided by the Network Services group that are designed to allow our members to leverage LOGIS resources to accomplish the goals of their organization,  while reducing their costs.

The Managed Services suite includes:  Network Data Backups, Shared Systems and Applications (includes shared server access of hardware and applications such as SharePoint, SQL, and Exchange), Hosted Systems (includes access to N +1 Data Center, Compellent SAN, etc.), and IP Telephony (IP Telephony was approved and established in 2007 and is now incorporated into the Managed Services offerings).

If you would like additional information on any of these services please contact Kevin Pikkaraine, Manager of Services, at 763-543-2626 or kpikkaraine@logis.org or Janelle Rients, Supervisor of Projects and Network Services,  at 763-543-2623 or jrients@logis.org.

LOGIS IP Telephony

IP Telephony

Business continuity has always been a primary focus for LOGIS.  Quite often this feature is overlooked compared to the other more glamorous features offered in our service.  However, when a member recently had a backhoe tear up the primary copper feeds to their facility, removing their local PRI service along with their dedicated phone lines, the value became immediately apparent!  The IP Telephony service immediately routed all inbound and outbound calls through the LOGIS PRIs, losing only the calls that were in process and resulting in an outage of only a few seconds.

The city utilized the LOGIS PRIs for several hours while repairs were made and until their circuits were restored.  Once everything was restored the IP Telephony Service seamlessly switched back to the local PRIs. The incident demonstrated the value of this often overlooked feature!

Network Services

On June 3rd the City of Richfield moved into their new municipal center!  This is a state of the art facility servicing Police and Police dispatch, city services, and a fire department!  LOGIS assisted Richfield from the inception of the project through the week following the move in. LOGIS contributed in a number of ways:

  • Designed and specified requirements for the Demark and computer room.
  • Wrote, evaluated, and managed cable and fiber optic bids.
  • Procured necessary IT equipment (routers, switches, etc.)
  • Provided uninterrupted phone service.
  • Established fiber optic connectivity between existing and new facility.
  • Transitioned dispatch center through temporary re-location to an outside facility.
  • Configured and established infrastructure at new facility, and also between facilities to allow ease of transition.

Congratulations to the City of Richfield on their new municipal center!

LOGIS IP Telephony

The IP Telephony Service marches on!  In May, LOGIS began upgrading our members to the newest 8.5 versions of Cisco Presence and Unity Connection.  These upgrades will continue through June and will add valuable features and functionality for the members of our IP Telephony service.

At the same time we have begun the 2011 member recovery tests.  These tests assure the smooth failover to SRST and of the member PRIs to the LOGIS data center PRIs.  These tests assure that failures of local service will not affect member phone availiablity.

Network Services

The Network Services group moves forward with testing of the “Managed Services” offerings.  We have successfully implemented offsite network based backups for one of the LOGIS members and configured a member server network that utilizes the LOGIS data center facility, switches, and SAN.  To date, these tests have proven very successful and look very promising in providing cost and labor savings to members utilizing the “Managed Services” offerings.
